New Work: Underground

Back in December I started working on this piece while at an art show - to demonstrate the process I use to create the abstract art I've been making these past 3 years. I put finishing it off for a few weeks over the holidays and picked it up again in spurts. After about 6 or 7 hours of work this past weekend I've finally finished it, and I'm really happy with it. I decided to stay loose and quick on this one, not getting hung down on every line being perfect.

I really love the PITT artist brushes from Faber-Castell. They last forever with a great point, great ink quality and they do amazing layering work. I wish some of the lighter colors didn't dry as dark as they do - but the tradeoff is the boldness and color fastness. They also dry really quick - which is a great help when laying colors over each other. For my blacks I use COPIC 100 or 110 brush markers. The black goes down first, and I can color over it with the PITT brushes without the COPIC's ink bleeding around. Sharpie's tend to bleed too much and lose their color faster than the COPIC.

New Work Update!

It's been quite a while since I've updated on new work. While my website can't show it, I've been very busy with graphic design in the past 6 months, but its for projects which must remain under wraps.

Overall I think 2009 was a great year for me, as I've started to really develop with my technique. My goals for 2010 include more painting and fine art to supplement the many hours I spend in front of a computer. To that end, I've invested in a new computer that's really helping the art along by allowing me to work larger and faster!

The website has just been updated to include work done in the past few months, including 2 one-page comics (one very abstract).

Isabella Geriatric Center - A Night in the Heights

Last night, I participated in an art auction through the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMMA) and the Isabella Geriatric Center on 190th St & Audubon Ave. in New York City.

I had two original pieces at auction: April Abstract & Life In Yellow - both 6"x6" abstractions that were quite popular. These pieces were precursors to my book Stray Thoughts, and are some of my favorite pieces. Both pieces sold at the auction, with a large portion of the proceeds going back to the Isabella center and to NoMMA. Thanks to everybody who attended and provided such amazing feedback!  The photo below shows my pieces in the black frames with black matting to the bottom left.
